Puerto Galera is a coastal town on the northern tip of Mindoro Island, in Oriental Mindoro, about 120 to 130 km south of Manila. It faces the Verde Island Passage, a strait that marine scientists describe as the "center of the center" of marine shorefish biodiversity. That biodiversity is what divers come to Puerto Galera for.
The Puerto Galera Biosphere Reserve, covering about 14,661 hectares on the northern tip of Mindoro, was listed by UNESCO in 1977 under its Man and the Biosphere Programme, and Puerto Galera Bay has been a member of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World club since 2005.
Above the water, there are three distinct days in one place: white-sand beaches with sunset bars, easy island hopping and snorkeling, and waterfalls and Iraya Mangyan villages in the hills.

White Beach, Puerto Galera
Puerto Galera's main swimming beach and the easiest base for a first visit. Spend the afternoon in the water, then stay for sunset, grilled seafood and the beachside bars. Banana boat rides and parasailing can be arranged in good weather.
Island hopping and snorkeling
A private banca takes you around the coves and small islands near Puerto Galera. Expect a snorkeling stop over the reef, lunch on a quiet beach and a relaxed return to your resort in the late afternoon.
Diving from Sabang
Sabang is the dive hub. Boats reach the local reefs and wrecks within minutes, and the Verde Island day trip is about 40 minutes away by speedboat. Sites run from shallow training reefs to advanced drift dives.
Tukuran Falls by carabao cart
Tukuran Falls, near Puerto Galera, is reached by a carabao-drawn cart: a slow countryside ride, then a cool forest waterfall. It fits into a half day away from the beach, with the afternoon free back at your resort.
Tamaraw Falls and Mangyan village day
One easy inland day: a morning stop at Tamaraw Falls on the Calapan road, then a guided visit to Talipanan Mangyan Village at the foot of Mt Malasimbo, led by local Iraya Mangyan guides. Watch nito vine weaving and buy baskets directly from the weavers.
Ponderosa golf and hill views
Puerto Galera's only golf course is a 9-hole, par-30 layout about 400 meters up the mountain at Ponderosa, with sea views from almost every tee. It is open to non-guests and has an indoor simulator for rainy days. Steep and short, it is more about the views than the scorecard.

Puerto Galera is an established dive area within a road and ferry trip of Manila. Most boat dives leave from Sabang. Local sites are only minutes away, and the Verde Island day trip is about 40 minutes by speedboat in normal conditions.

Carry a surface marker buoy on drift dives, follow your dive center's briefing and the local sanctuary rules, and never touch coral or clams. Diving runs all year; visibility is usually clearest from about March to June.

How to get to Puerto Galera from Manila via Batangas Port
Puerto Galera has no airport. You drive from Manila to Batangas Port, about 2 to 3 hours depending on traffic, then cross by ferry. Current public schedules from Batangas list Balatero Port as the arrival point for every trip, so public ferries no longer run straight to White Beach or Sabang. From Balatero it is a short tricycle or private transfer to your beach.

Last boats
Return ferries from Balatero run from early morning, with most last departures in the mid-to-late afternoon, and schedules change with the weather and Coast Guard advisories. We plan your last day around the crossing, not the other way around.

Best time to visit Puerto Galera
Seasons and weather
Puerto Galera is warm all year. The drier northeast monsoon (Amihan) runs roughly from November to May and brings calmer seas; February to April is the driest and busiest stretch, especially Holy Week and long weekends. The southwest monsoon (Habagat) runs roughly from June to October, with more rain and greener hills.
Typhoons can come in any month but are most frequent from June to October. Ferries can pause when the Coast Guard issues an advisory, so we keep a buffer day in wet-season plans. The sheltered bays mean diving and boat trips often carry on in the rainy months, and visibility is usually clearest from about March to June.
November to February
The season turns drier in November, then stays cooler and comfortable through February.
March to May
Hot, bright and busiest around Holy Week.
June to October
Wetter and quieter. We keep a buffer day for ferry advisories.

Island hopping or diving

Do ferries still go straight to Sabang or White Beach?
Public ferries from Batangas Port no longer go straight to Sabang or White Beach. Current public schedules from Galerian, Island Water and Montenegro Shipping Lines list Balatero Port in Puerto Galera as the arrival point for every trip. From Balatero you continue to White Beach, Sabang or your resort by tricycle or private transfer, usually a short ride.
What fees do visitors pay to enter Puerto Galera?
As of 2026, every tourist visiting Puerto Galera pays a PHP 120 Environmental User Fee, valid for the whole stay, with 20% off for seniors, persons with disabilities and students over six. Travelers departing from Batangas Port also pay the passenger terminal fee, which has been PHP 90 since 1 July 2026. Ferry fares are separate and depend on the operator and class.
What is the PG-Pass?
The PG-Pass is Puerto Galera's official online visitor registration. You enter your details and stay dates at pgpass.experiencepuertogalera.com and receive a QR pass to show at ports and borders when you arrive. The PHP 120 Environmental User Fee is handled through the same system, so registering before you travel makes the port line faster.
Which beach should I stay on in Puerto Galera?
For a first visit to Puerto Galera, stay on White Beach, which has calm swimming, restaurants and evenings out. Choose Sabang if you plan to dive every day, Big or Small La Laguna for quieter dive-resort beaches close to Sabang, and Aninuan or Talipanan, west of White Beach, for slow and peaceful beach days.
Is Puerto Galera good for diving?

When is the best time to visit Puerto Galera?

No, Apo Reef is not a practical day trip from Puerto Galera. It lies off Occidental Mindoro, on the opposite side of Mindoro Island, so it is planned as a separate trip. For a full day of advanced diving from Puerto Galera itself, the Verde Island Drop-off is about 40 minutes away by speedboat from Sabang in normal conditions.

Culture in depth: the Iraya Mangyan
The Iraya Mangyan are one of the eight Mangyan groups of Mindoro. At Talipanan Mangyan Village, at the foot of Mt Malasimbo, local indigenous guides lead visits and the weavers sell baskets, trays and coasters made from nito vine. Each weaver's pattern is her own, so no two pieces are the same.
If you want to go further, we can arrange visits to more remote communities with an extra day or two. Please expect real walking, very simple accommodation and local food cooked by your hosts. It suits travelers who are comfortable with basic conditions.

The Verde Island Passage and why the reefs matter
The Verde Island Passage runs between Mindoro and Luzon and carries the currents that feed Puerto Galera's reefs. Scientists call it the "center of the center" of marine shorefish biodiversity. Local marine protected areas already exist, and bills to declare the whole passage a national protected seascape were still pending in Congress in 2026. The 2023 oil spill from the MT Princess Empress was a reminder of why that protection matters.
