Dumaguete

DUMAGUETE CITY

Dumaguete City, the largest in the provincial city of Negros Oriental in the Philippines, is also the main seaport of the province. Known as the ‘City of Gentle People’ due to its friendly and warm residents.

The city houses four universities, twelve primary schools, and nine high schools. Thus, it is also termed as the ‘University City’. The student population residing there is around 30,000, with most coming from nearby cities. These students contribute to the city’s trendy and ‘flowing’ vibe, giving it a youthful, fresh, and dynamic atmosphere.

Compared to many other regional cities and provinces, Dumaguete is less congested, cleaner, more developed, more urbanized, and more in touch with the modern world. At the same time, it retains an ecological setting through its beachfront hotels, diving sites, and the pièce de résistance – dolphin and whale watching.

Attractions

The easiest and quickest way is through daily direct flights from Manila and Cebu, but you can also get there by local boat (RORO) or ferry from Cebu.

Attractions in Dumaguete

  1. Dumaguete Bell Tower: Originally built in 1811 as a response to the frequent pirate invasions, this tower stands as the oldest structure in the city. It’s a testament to Dumaguete’s Spanish colonial heritage and the resilience of its people. The tower was built as a watchtower to alert residents of any invaders. It remains an iconic architectural feature, beautifully preserved, and also houses the Our Lady of Perpetual Help shrine at its base.
  2. St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral: Constructed the same year as the Bell Tower, this is the largest church in the city. It is an exemplary representation of the elaborate European architecture that typified buildings from its era, boasting high ceilings, ornate pulpits, and an especially gilded, intricately decorated altar. The church underwent renovations in 2005 but still retains its grandeur and opulence.
  3. Rizal Boulevard: This 700-meter stretch dedicated to the Philippines’ national hero, Jose Rizal, is much acclaimed for its vintage gas lamps and adjacent green strip. Adding a mystical character to the boulevard is its historical significance. It’s believed to be the very spot where national icons like Jose Rizal, Khalil Gibran, Mahatma Gandhi, and Filipino pacifist Che Guevara took their morning walks, presumably at dawn as the boulevard faces east.
  4. Silliman University Campus: Founded in 1901 by Dr. David Sutherland Hibbard and Laura Crooks, Silliman University was the first private university established by Americans in the country and the first Protestant university in Asia. Apart from being the most sought-after university in the region, it is also one of the top tourist destinations. The campus showcases beautiful architecture, serene open spaces, and a museum depicting the region’s indigenous tribal culture.

Visiting these places will give one a glimpse of the rich history, culture, and architectural grandeur of Dumaguete.

Apo Island, not to be confused with the equally stunning Apo Reef in Mindoro, is one of the top diving spots in the Philippines. It is home to over two-thirds of the world’s known coral species, making it an underwater paradise for divers and marine life enthusiasts.

Designated as a protected marine sanctuary since 1982, this haven has been pivotal in marine conservation efforts in the Philippines. The island’s rich biodiversity, clear waters, and vibrant reefs offer a spectacular view of life below the surface, showcasing not just corals but also a wide array of marine life, from colorful fish to sea turtles.

To get to Apo Island, one can take a 45-minute bus ride or hop on the colorful jeepneys leaving the city, heading towards Zamboangita. From there, a 30-minute boat or ‘Bangka’ ride will transport you to this marine wonderland.

If you are visiting the Philippines and have a penchant for marine beauty, Apo Island should undoubtedly be on your bucket list. Whether you are a diver, snorkeler, or someone who simply loves nature, this marine sanctuary promises an experience like no other.

The Twin Lakes – Balinsayao and Danao

Situated about 300 meters above sea level, these tranquil lakes boast a diverse and impressive ecological system. They are essentially cradled in a depression surrounded by four mountains: Mahungot, Kalbasan, Balinsayao, and Guidabon. The Twin Lakes are nothing short of mystical and surreal, a magnificent display of nature’s splendor. Any visitor to the area would be enchanted by their magical and awe-inspiring beauty, making it a must-visit natural attraction.

Activities are abundant in this area. Visitors can indulge in swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, and even trekking in the nearby mountains. But even if you prefer a less active approach, simply breathing in the clean, fresh air while basking in the abundant tropical flora can be rejuvenating. The region is adorned with rare vines and the towering Almagica tree – the tallest tree species in the Philippines, reaching heights of over 60 meters. Moreover, the area serves as a home to a plethora of wildlife, offering a fantastic natural experience for both nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts.
