Baguio – The Cool City

Baguio - The Cool City

The city that earned the nickname “Summer Capital of the Philippines” due to its relatively cool climate compared to most other regions in the country, Baguio is considered the commercial, trade, and educational hub of the entire Northern Luzon region. Nestled high in the mountains of Benguet, it attracts residents from Manila who seek relief from the scorching temperatures during the summer months from March to May, as well as during fasting holidays when temperatures tend to soar to unbearable levels, especially in densely populated and sweltering cities like the Manila metropolis.

Baguio city is so popular that it is the only Philippine destination chosen among the top 25 Asian destinations in the Asia Destinations category on TripAdvisor’s website, an achievement in itself.

Attractions

Tam Awan Village.
A settlement of artists located just outside the city, established by a non-profit organization called the Chanum Foundation in 1998. In the village, they reconstructed traditional Ifugao tribal houses to recreate a native village of the Cordillera mountain range, showcasing children’s art and local handicrafts, workshops, and other activities that feature the rich cultural heritage and colorful history of the Cordillera people. The meaning of the word “Tam Awan” in the Ifugao language is ‘a vantage point,’ which is a fitting description for the village’s excellent location on a hilltop that offers a breathtaking view of the western Philippine Sea (South China Sea).

Camp John Hay. A former rest and recreation facility for the United States military, located within the Baguio area on a sprawling 46-acre property. It has been redesigned and transformed into a mountain resort complex with hotels, restaurants, shops, and an 18-hole golf course nestled among the rolling hills. Playing golf amidst the cool mountain air, the scent of fresh pine trees, and picturesque scenery is a dream come true. It’s also worth mentioning the historic amphitheater with its bell-like structure, beautifully landscaped gardens, scenic walking trails, and the high vantage point aptly named to indicate a stunning view of the Cordillera mountain range.

Baguio Cathedral (Our Lady of the Atonement Cathedral). One of the most revered sites is this cathedral, also known as Mount Mary by Belgian missionaries who arrived here in 1907, and as Kampo by the Ibaloi people long before the first European visitors reached the mountains. It is also the place where thousands of people perished in the bombing of Baguio during World War II. A visit to the city would not be complete, especially for Catholics, without visiting this historic church with its pink walls and windows and two bell towers.

City Parks. In Baguio, parks filled with giant pine trees are scattered throughout the city and receive frequent visits from both locals and foreign tourists all year round. Mines View Park offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains. In Burnham Park, located in the heart of the city, you can find a man-made lake, a rose garden, and an orchidarium, just across from another tourist site, The Mansion. Wright Park is famous for its numerous pine trees and the scenic views it offers, definitely worth a photo or two.

Bencab Museum. Owned by the national artist Ben Cabrera, who also showcases his artworks in the museum. The museum is situated on a hilltop with a breathtaking view of a beautiful and impressive rainforest. It displays a variety of artworks, ethnographic pieces made with hands and bowls, as well as different paintings and sculptures.
