Cauayan Island Resort, which opened in 2008, was established after its owners decided to take a trip to the Philippines that would change their lives forever.

When they arrived in El Nido as simple tourists, it took them only a day of island-hopping to fall in love with the place, its breathtaking landscapes, and its warm and welcoming people. Although they had no local connections or knowledge of hospitality or construction, both of them returned to Spain with one idea in mind: “We are going to buy an island and build a resort in El Nido.”

Needless to say, the response from everyone at home was far from encouraging: “What are you talking about? Have you lost your mind? You will never succeed!” However, against all advice, the owners returned a year later to begin their search for a place.

The initial idea was something small and simple, although in their search around the beautiful surroundings of El Nido, they came across Cauayan and couldn’t resist. When they stepped onto the front beach, they met Decen for the first time.

When he wasn’t wearing anything but underwear and accompanied by his dog Potol, he greeted them as the island’s caretaker – completely wild and impossible to penetrate because of the lush jungle that covered it. Without even knowing who the landowners were, they promised Decen that one day they would hold this place, and he would work for them. Today, both Decen and Potol are still here as part of the Cauayan family.
