The Island of Palawan

Many people, especially foreign tourists, assume that Palawan has become a permanent and overly commercialized tourist destination. The truth is that in Palawan, you can still find many charming and undiscovered resorts that make it an excellent honeymoon destination in the Philippines.

How to go there.

There are several flights from Manila to Palawan departing daily, making the journey relatively easy and accessible. Once you arrive in Puerto Princesa City, you have a wide range of options for your onward journey. Here are some must-visit destinations for your honeymoon in the area.

Where to go and what to do, and what truly suits a honeymoon?

El Nido, Palawan

From our perspective, El Nido is one of the top headline destinations for a honeymoon in Palawan. While it’s one of the most popular destinations in the Philippines for both foreigners and locals, the area is carefully preserved and protected for its environment and natural treasures. In El Nido, you can find some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and particularly rich underwater ecosystems. It’s a beloved destination among foreign tourists due to its stunning white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters. Couples seeking plenty of sunshine during their honeymoon in the Philippines will certainly enjoy the beautiful beaches of El Nido.

Aside from swimming, couples can go snorkeling, diving, and island hopping in El Nido. The food in Palawan is excellent, and its seafood is some of the best in the country. Local fish are key ingredients in the meals served at El Nido’s restaurants.

Despite the significant volume of tourists who visit here every year, there is no shortage of accommodation options in the Philippines. Prices for one night can range from $27 to $1500, depending on the type of hotel you book.

Coron, Busuanga (Palawan)

Is an island rich in limestone cliffs and is a preferred destination for tourists seeking perfect tranquility and the most stunning wonders of nature. Coron is unique in its topography as most of its coastline areas are covered with mangroves. There is no doubt that it is a gem of beauty worth visiting, especially during a honeymoon.

The 700 steps leading to Mount Tapyas are one of the main attractions on a tour in Coron. The mountain rises above the town at a height of 210 meters. It is recommended to start the climb in the late afternoon so you can enjoy the spectacular sunset when you reach the summit. Along the way, there are rest stops where you can savor the trail and cherish every moment of it.

Maquinit’s hot springs are another place that honeymoon couples will definitely want to visit when they come to Coron. It’s a perfect place to relax after a tiring climb, as the warm waters soothe your muscles.

Lagoons and lakes like Kayangan Lake are must-visit destinations in Coron. You’ll also find intricately formed limestone formations bordering the crystal-clear waters.

Calauit Safari
Just because you’re on your honeymoon in the Philippines doesn’t mean you should miss out on an African-style safari. Calauit Safari is a safari tour featuring giraffes, zebras, ostriches, and antelopes. You can get up close to these animals in their natural habitat.

Snorkeling around the coral gardens is one of the best treats Coron offers. The stunning coral formations are truly a sight to remember.

For nature enthusiasts, diving deep to closely examine the Japanese shipwrecks in Sangat and Lusong is a must. There’s a fleet of five Japanese supply ships that sank in the waters of Coron in 1944 and still lie in the sea’s depths today.

Accommodations in Coron

You can find reasonably priced lodging options in the town ranging from $20 to $100 per night (and even more for newer hotels). On the nearby islands, just a boat ride away from Caramoan, prices can go up to several hundred dollars per night for a room.

Baguio, Benguet Province

This destination is already considered the summer capital of the Philippines due to its relatively cool climate. Its elevation is the reason for the cool weather in the region throughout the year, making it a perfect honeymoon spot, especially for couples who enjoy mountain attractions.

Arrival in Baguio:
When traveling by car from Manila, the journey takes about 4-5 hours. There are no commercial flights to Baguio, so the overland route is the only way to get here.

Activities and Attractions:

BenCab Museum Tour
Native to the Benguet province, the residents take pride in their rich history, and their art reflects this significantly. The BenCab Museum showcases some of the most unique pieces of art, ranging from paintings to sculptures and even kitchenware. Additionally, there are several paintings depicting the lives of local residents before and after colonization. You can observe how talented and skilled the locals are when it comes to handcrafts and local art, even without formal education or training.

Burnham Park
If you have a passion for romantic boat rides and horseback riding, this is the perfect place to visit during the day and into the late afternoon hours.

Dining at Cucina La Amare
An authentic Italian kitchen that’s within reach even if you’re thousands of kilometers away from Europe. This restaurant offers the best Lebanese pizza in all of Baguio, and the atmosphere is perfect for honeymooning couples.

The Manor at Camp John Hay
A cool European-style hotel nestled among pine trees, lush gardens all around, and comfortable rooms with views that you can only find in the northern region. The cool air and the hotel’s appearance create a romantic atmosphere, making it ideal for honeymooners.

Baguio Craft Brewery

Couples who share a love for beer should include Baguio’s brewery as one of the selected sites in the city. This brewery offers various types of locally crafted beer that reflect the culture and tastes of the locals. On the rooftop, you can sit and enjoy the particularly beautiful view, especially at night and during the late afternoon hours.

Cafe in the Sky

If you haven’t yet been amazed by the views of the skyline, this is the place to be. As its name suggests, the café is situated at a high elevation, and the vistas it offers are truly breathtaking.

Just after lunch (around 1 or 2 o’clock), the clouds transform into what appears to be clusters of cotton balls – a phenomenon that inspires many photographs.

Bohol Island

Going to Bohol is particularly easy if you opt for a flight. From Manila, you can take a direct flight to Bohol and reach the island within an hour and a half. The price range for flights varies from $50 to $75 (or more), depending on the season.

A tourist gem in Visayas, Bohol is an attractive destination for honeymooning couples in the Philippines, offering numerous good reasons to visit. The island boasts some of the world’s most impressive beaches and unique natural landscapes that are considered wonders of nature. Here are some of the activities and sites you can enjoy when you arrive in Bohol.

The Chocolate Hills

A wonder of nature – are called so because they resemble chocolate kisses that everyone knows and loves. These hills change their color from green to brown depending on the weather, but they are especially impressive during the summer season when they wear a dark brown hue, easily mistaken for giant chocolate kisses.

The Tarsier Nature Reserve

Tarsiers are the smallest primates in the world, and undoubtedly, they are among the cutest. Bohol is their home, and their habitat is protected and preserved by both the national government and private organizations. A visit to Bohol will give you the opportunity to have an unfiltered view of the tarsiers in their natural habitat, which is well-preserved.

Town of Sagada

Located in the mountainous province of the Philippines, Sagada is approximately a 12-15 hour bus ride from Manila. Alternatively, you can take a flight to either the Cauayan or Bagabag airports, with the latter starting flights in September 2017. This charming gem of nature is steeped in history and wonders. Couples who are less interested in beaches and are more enthusiastic about discovering new places and things will love Sagada and its surroundings. The places and tours included in the visit to the area are as follows:

Rice Terraces: A miraculous human-made wonder that is, in fact, an agricultural engineering masterpiece. The rice fields are spread over several levels, not only creating a stunning sight but also serving practical irrigation purposes. It’s an excellent opportunity for photography and exploration.

Adventure in Sumaguing Cave

Also known as the “Big Cave,” this cave offers a one-of-a-kind experience. Couples can have their own Indiana Jones-style moments here, minus the villains. This cave system of stalactite caves served as a refuge for guerrilla fighters during World War II (Japanese occupation). Today, it’s a must-visit site for travelers of all ages (caution is advised when exploring this cave due to the risk of slipping!).

Practical Tips

What is the best time for a honeymoon in the Philippines? The peak months in most of the mentioned places are April and May, as they mark the peak of summer in the Philippines. If you want to enjoy your honeymoon in the Philippines and avoid the crowds, plan your trip for the months of June to September (rainy season) or January to March (less hot). Booking your trip outside of the peak season can also save you a lot of money, as airlines offer special prices and hotels offer discounted rates to attract customers.

Weather Considerations

At any given time, the weather in the Philippines tends to be hot. Make sure you pack lightweight clothing and plenty of sunscreen to avoid heatstroke, especially during the months of March, April, and May. It’s also a good idea to have a GPS on your mobile phone, especially if it’s your first time in the Philippines. In some areas, especially in remote provinces or during treks in the hinterlands, navigation can be challenging without a proper guide.
