Interested to see what you’re going to see in the Philippines? Well, here’s a glimpse, including Coron’s highlights!
Calauit Park
This is one of the rare examples where you can use the words “Philippines” and “safari” in one sentence. While Coron is mainly known for its stunning beaches, it also offers a slightly different experience in the form of a wildlife safari in Calauit. You can take a safari tour with giraffes and other exotic animals that are usually only found in Africa or in wildlife reserves around the world.

Mount Tapyas
If you are a fan of panoramic views, Mount Tapyas and the 724 steps leading to it are definitely the place for you. Visiting it also provides an excellent physical challenge for those who enjoy climbing mountains but dislike the mud and dirt involved. The mountain’s height is only 210 meters above sea level, but it’s certainly high enough for you to enjoy a breathtaking view during sunrise or sunset every day. It’s definitely worth investing the effort required for the climb to enjoy the picturesque view.
Smith Beach
For the most part, private paradises come with an extremely expensive price tag. This is not the case with Smith Beach, located right in the heart of the ocean, allowing for privacy and complete control of the beach. It may not be an exceptionally luxurious beach like those found at exclusive resorts, but it boasts wonderful sand and crystal-clear blue waters that you won’t have to share with anyone else.
Shipwrecks (sunken Japanese ships)
In accordance with the rich history of the Philippines, especially during the colonial period, you can find several sites of sunken Japanese ships around Coron Island. Not only is it an excellent experience for diving and snorkeling through the ancient metal structures of the ships, but it’s also a delight and privilege to see how various corals have grown inside and on the ships themselves. This is an experience that no one should miss, whether you are a novice or an experienced diver.

Lake Barracuda
Contrary to what it might sound like, this lake is one of the most popular destinations among tourists. Lake Barracuda is named after the indigenous fish that inhabit its waters, but it’s more famous for its gigantic limestone walls surrounding the lake, giving it an air of mystery. The water is cool throughout the day, but swimming in it is a true delight for those who can overcome their fear of the dark. The barracudas mostly keep to themselves, and they are hardly a threat to tourists.
Twin Lagoon
One of the main attractions for tourists visiting Coron. One lagoon is where most boats anchor, while the other is considered ideal for swimming and snorkeling. No matter which lagoon you choose, you are guaranteed to enjoy the refreshing waters, warm and cold, in different parts of the lagoon.
Malcapuya Island
If you’re looking for a beach with exceptionally clear waters where you can watch the seabed all day, Malcapuya is the right destination for you. The soft, white sand is comfortable to walk on, and the crystal-clear waters are perfect for swimming for hours on end.
Kayangan Lake
Located on the outskirts of Coron’s islands, Kayangan Lake is a treasure that changes the way you think about lakes. The vast space of the lake is surrounded by impressive and picturesque limestone formations and lush greenery. The water itself is a work of art that inspires awe and wonder. Swimming in the lake is an especially enjoyable experience, and the views are simply stunning.
Lusong Coral Reef
There are many treasures to discover in the underwater world of Coron, and the Lusong Coral Reef offers an experience that attests to the immense beauty of the island. The coral reef is a protected natural reserve, but it is still open to visitors who want to see the inspiring beauty of Coron lying just beneath the surface. The corals vary in colors, shapes, and sizes, but they are all stunning in their beauty. A diving guide will undoubtedly assist you, but visitors and divers are requested to be especially careful around the corals.
Maquinit Hot Springs
Whether you’ve been trekking for hours and need relaxation or simply love to soak in a hot spring, the Maquinit Hot Springs are the perfect choice for you. The soothing waters will make you feel refreshed and revitalized in just 30 seconds of soaking. This place is suitable for both children and adults alike, making it a great family destination.

Accommodation Options
In order to choose where to lay your head after a full day of touring and exploring the attractions of Coron, it’s advisable to do so with all the information in front of you. The assumption that every place you’ll find in Palawan is excessively expensive is far from the truth, and you can easily find mid-range budget hotels if you prefer.
Here are some of the best hotel options in Coron, including choices for travelers on a limited budget.
Two Seasons Resort and Spa
First, there’s paradise, and then there’s paradise. Two Seasons is paradise not only because of its ideal location but also because of its facilities, service, and design. While it may be on the list of the most luxurious hotels in Coron, it still surprises with its level of service and luxury.
The room types from which you can choose range from comfortable to extremely indulgent. The Sandbar Bungalow, in particular, is an inspiration for movies, especially because of its location at the very edge of the island. It’s paradise within paradise, as some guests have described it. The spacious bungalows sit on a luxurious piece of real estate from which you can see the full splendor of Coron Island. The Beach Bungalows are equally impressive. The suites, located just a few steps above the hotel, and a few steps from the ocean, tempt those who stay in them never to leave.
The treatments offered by the spa are heavenly and luxurious to the extreme. You can indulge in any of the available massages and relax in the endless pampering. Hilot, a popular Filipino massage, is particularly soothing and therapeutic. Here are some additional treatments offered by the resort: facial and body treatments, foot spa, and herbal baths, a special blend of oils, herbs, and spices for a therapeutic and calming bath.
Recommendation: If you’ve come here with your significant other, it’s worth choosing the highest room category; it may be costly, but it’s worth every peso.

Sangat Island Dive Resort
For those looking for a vacation resort that has everything you expect to find in a great place like Coron, you should consider the option of Sangat Island Dive Resort. This resort not only offers excellent rooms but also various tours around the island, such as deep-sea diving, island hopping, nature treks, boat rentals, rock climbing, and caves. And, of course, you should not overlook the warm springs, especially if you want to relax and unwind together.
Corto Del Mar Hotel
Room prices at the hotel start at $100 per night, with rooms of a moderate standard, not bad at all. Corto Del Mar Hotel is what many of us define as a boutique hotel, so there is no worry about crowds of guests swarming the hotel while you relax by the pool or dine in the dining room. With only 32 rooms and suites, it’s a kind of refuge from the crowds on the beach where hundreds of people swim or bask in the sun at any given time.
Please note: If you love Mediterranean-style design, you should consider this hotel, characterized by an authentic touch.
El Rio Y Mar
For couples looking for the perfect peaceful hotel, this is an option worth considering. One of the most impressive features of El Rio Y Mar Hotel is the floating spa made of bamboo, located in the heart of the ocean. It’s a unique and refreshing idea, something couples will definitely not want to miss if they choose to book a room at the hotel. The bar on the reef also provides a particularly nice addition for those who enjoy shots and cocktails under the moonlight.
Coron Westown Resort
If you’re looking for a hotel with excellent facilities, then Coron Westown Resort should be on your list of options. The hotel has 3 pools, a restaurant, a bar, a karaoke lounge, and a business center. You can enjoy different types of vacations and a great experience right at the hotel itself. In addition, the hotel also offers medical treatment available from an on-call doctor at any given moment. Some staff members have even been trained to provide basic first aid assistance for minor injuries like cuts or abrasions. The hotel also offers excellent room service, laundry services, and ironing.
Funny Lion
Aside from its name, there’s nothing funny about this hotel. The facilities are good, and the overall value for money is excellent considering the level of comfort and proximity to the beach. The rooms and suites are named after lions. The price is particularly good if you book outside of the peak season.
Club Paradise
Another popular choice among couples is Club Paradise, which offers a comprehensive experience, not just accommodation. You can choose from five different types of suites, each with a different view. The beachfront cottages with sweeping ocean views are in high demand due to the breathtaking ocean scenery. However, even if you opt for the Garden Cottage or Hillside Cottage, you’ll still enjoy the lush green surroundings.
Coron Bancuang Mansion
Perhaps the most unique rooms you can find anywhere in Coron are located at Bancuang Mansion – works of art in terms of design and comfort. All the rooms are well-equipped with the most modern furniture and provide the comfort people expect from a luxury hotel, in addition to the impressive appearance of the hotel itself. When you approach the building, the feeling is like gazing at a Taj Mahal or the pyramids in Egypt. Its meticulous attention to detail will leave you in awe.
If you truly want to indulge and pamper your family and loved ones, the Penthouse Suite is the cherry on top and the gem in the crown. In addition to the regular amenities and services offered in the standard rooms, the Penthouse includes a private terrace, a refrigerator, a separate dressing room, as well as a bathroom and a fully equipped kitchenette.
KokosNuss Garden Resort
Staying in Coron doesn’t have to be expensive, as evidenced by hotels like KokosNuss Garden Resort, which offers reasonably priced rooms. For a rate of 1740 pesos per night (outside the peak season, and we have even better rates), you can stay in one of the hotel’s rooms and enjoy easy access to the beautiful beach just a few steps away. If you are traveling with family or a group of friends, there are also cottages and bungalows available that can accommodate more than 2 guests.
Food and Drink
People tend to forget about calorie counting and meticulous eating when they go on vacation. A trip to Coron allows you to enjoy some indulgence, break your dietary restrictions, and relish local and international cuisine that the island has to offer. Here are some places worth checking out that offer great food and excellent drinks:
Sinugba sa Balay
If you’re craving seafood and grilled dishes, this is one of the best places to dine in Coron. Diners can choose from a variety of dishes, most of which are grilled to perfection. The kitchen primarily serves local Filipino cuisine, and the freshness of the ingredients will leave you impressed.
Recommendation: It’s best to eat with your hands, especially with seafood dishes. You can dip your food in the provided condiments, although trying them without will allow you to truly appreciate the freshness of the meal.
La Sirenetta
This restaurant takes its name from local folklore, and it embodies that spirit down to the smallest detail. The word “Sirenetta” means “little mermaid,” but there’s nothing small or insignificant when it comes to the quality of the food here. While you won’t find many exotic or unique dishes, the meals are cooked to perfection, using the freshest ingredients available. If you enjoy dining by the sea and sipping excellent cocktails, La Sirenetta is an excellent choice for you.
Winnie’s Restaurant
For Europeans craving the taste of home or locals simply seeking good food, Winnie’s is a great place for delicious meals. The restaurant is Swiss-owned and offers a variety of European dishes, including crab curry, fried rice with crabs, sautéed vegetables, and a selection of shakes. Prices are relatively reasonable, and the atmosphere is excellent.
Altrove Coron Restaurant
No matter where you are in the world, at some point, millions of people dream of Italian food. If you happen to find yourself in Coron with an Italian craving, you’re in luck because Altrove restaurant offers exquisite Italian dishes that satisfy both the stomach and the soul. The celebrated pesto sauce and the excellent pizza are must-tries. For dessert, the fantastic gelato rivals any Italian gelateria.
Brujita Bar and Resto
Vegetarians typically struggle to find places to eat while traveling due to the limited selection of meals. You can rest assured that in Coron, there is a vegetarian and vegan-friendly restaurant and bar that offers a great menu and an excellent selection of alcoholic beverages. The place may not be upscale as you might wish, but it’s comfortable and satisfying.
Lobster King
Lobster dishes are often associated with exorbitant prices, but not at Lobster King. This place offers excellent value for your money, and the food quality is second to none. In addition to lobsters, the restaurant also offers fresh and succulent seafood like buttered crabs. A light drizzle of lemon on the seafood is all you need for a unique experience. Some tourists start with a small order of seafood and end up ordering dozens more. The only downside is that there is no air conditioning, so be prepared to sweat during your meal.
Kawayanan Grill Station
You can’t truly enjoy a perfect beach experience without indulging in some of Coron’s grilled dishes. Kawayanan Grill specializes in charcoal-grilled fish and other seafood varieties and meats. Dishes like Lechon Kawali and Lechon Manok are particularly satisfying and worth the price, especially considering their generous portions.
Corto Del Mar Restaurant
A romantic dining hotspot for couples, known for its excellent atmosphere and fantastic menu. The restaurant offers a fantastic selection, including burgers, pizza, and beer, alongside pasta dishes.
Coffee Kong, Coron
Sometimes, all you need is a good cup of coffee before your next activity, whether it’s swimming, diving, or simply lounging on the beach. Coffee Kong is a great place to relax with friends or family and enjoy a good cup of coffee. The decor is beautiful and inviting, without the corporate feel of large chain coffee shops. It’s cozy and comfortable, and you can sit here for hours with a good book while sipping on a cappuccino.
Pedro’s Gelato
Gelato, or ice cream, is the simplest dessert there is, yet it provides us with comfort and nostalgia with every new scoop. Pedro’s Gelato is known as the best gelateria in Coron, and it’s no surprise at all because their gelato is truly delicious and fantastic. Many claim that once you taste Pedro’s gelato, you’ll be forever spoiled for any other ice cream.
Activities, Festivals, and Everything in Between
Boat Trips Between Islands
One of the best things about Coron is its numerous beaches where you can swim, snorkel, and dive. Just because you’ve chosen what you think is the “best beach” in town doesn’t mean that other beaches aren’t worth visiting. Island hopping can be done in two ways: you can walk to the nearby beaches or rent a boat and hop from one beach to another. Some tourists rent a boat for an entire day and stop at the beaches they like.
One of the places you definitely shouldn’t miss is Dimakya Island, the northernmost island in Coron. Its white sandy beach stretches endlessly for about 700 meters, and the waters are amazing. Some describe swimming here as being born anew.
Observing Sea Cows in Their Natural Habitat
Sea cows, or dugongs, are gentle marine mammals native to Coron, and it’s a special experience to observe them. These creatures are protected both by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the local government of Palawan because they are endangered.
Deep Sea Diving and Snorkeling
These two water activities are closely related and often go hand in hand. Most people start with snorkeling as a first step before becoming certified divers. Once they master both types of activities, they usually want more and more from the experience. There are several dive and snorkel sites in Coron, but it’s easier to list the places where you can’t dive or snorkel because the entire island is suitable for both activities. Here are some popular diving centers:
- Corto Divers
- Rocksteady
- Fun and Sun
- Neptune
- Freediving
- Coron Sanho
- Mantis
- Dive Cal
Nightlife
Nightlife in Coron is not particularly vibrant or diverse, mainly due to the limited number of bars and even fewer nightclubs. However, this can be a good thing as it allows you to enjoy the natural beauty at night without the bright lights and loud music. You can even take a nighttime swim if you’re brave enough to handle the cold water.
Culion Tour
The Palawan region is rich in history, and Coron, in particular, has a unique historical background. Culion stands out as it served as an official leper colony during the American colonial period in the Philippines. More than a thousand leprosy patients were transferred to this island to die in isolation because authorities feared the disease would spread to major cities. Today, after long periods of isolation, Culion boasts the largest variety of wildlife in the country. Now that it’s officially free from leprosy, it’s one of the most sought-after destinations for tourists visiting Coron.
Souvenirs
While you can always buy a T-shirt that says “My friend went to Coron, Palawan, and all I got was this lousy shirt,” you can find more creative gift ideas in Coron and other parts of Palawan. One local delicacy is cashew nuts, and there are at least ten different ways to prepare them. Whether you like them roasted, fried, salted, or sweetened, you’ll find all of these varieties and more in the souvenir shops in Coron.
Snorkeling at Siete Picados
There’s something special about this snorkeling site that goes beyond the local legend. It’s said that seven brothers drowned in the sea, and as a result, seven large rocks emerged from the sea. Whether you believe the legend or not, the snorkeling experience here is fantastic.
Practical Tips for Travelers:
Hotel Reservations: Always check various websites and compare prices for the hotel you want to book. This tip is especially useful during the peak tourist season when special deals are relatively rare, and many people flock to Coron and the surrounding islands.
Cellular Communication: Not all hotels and resorts offer Wi-Fi, and those that do may not necessarily have fast internet connections. Keep this in mind and consider getting a local LTE SIM card for your phone. If you want to stay connected 24/7, budget around 100 pesos per day for data or purchase a data package from one of the local telecom providers.
Cash/ATM Availability: It’s not advisable to carry a lot of cash, but it’s good to have small bills, especially if you plan to dine at local restaurants. Some places accept major credit cards like Visa and Mastercard (and occasionally American Express), but you may not be able to use your credit card for small purchases. There are a few ATMs in Coron, but not everywhere, so make sure you have enough cash for your stay on the island.
Safety and Security: While hotels are generally safe, once you step outside, it’s a different story. Coron is very peaceful, and the people are friendly, but thefts can still occur, sometimes even by fellow tourists you may come into contact with. So, be cautious and keep an eye on your belongings. Hotels usually don’t provide insurance for lost items, so if you lose something, you may not see it again.
Language and Etiquette: Filipinos are generally patient and tolerant of behavior as long as it doesn’t cross the line. Be polite when interacting with locals, and they will be happy to help you. However, always remember to respect their way of life, especially when dealing with older people. Coron residents are used to tourists, but they’re not heavily influenced by external cultures.
Transportation: Getting around the island is generally done by tricycle or by renting a boat for the day. For other destinations, you’ll likely need to walk, especially when moving from one beach to another. It’s easy to ask locals for directions, as they are always willing to help tourists. Some might even offer to take you directly to your destination to ensure you arrive safely.
