Benguet

When you arrive in the Philippines and crave fresh strawberries, you might ask yourself if Filipinos really consume so many strawberries and if they import strawberries for Filipinos.

Well, Filipinos are known for growing coconut trees, pineapples, and bananas due to the tropical climate.

But it’s not the case…

Most strawberries are grown in Trinidad, Benguet, in the northern Philippines, where the weather is cooler, and the temperature reaches 18.55 degrees Celsius. This area is blessed with diverse landscape formations. Locals cultivate field strawberries in their fields. Just a short 6 km drive from Baguio City, you’ll arrive at La Trinidad Strawberry Farm.

At these farms, you can see the strawberry crops, which are an agricultural wonder. The strawberries are arranged in rows in plots covered with black plastic to prevent excessive water from rain reaching the soil.

Throughout the day, local farmers lovingly tend to their strawberry fields, and their expertise in strawberry cultivation is recognized by the government. Strawberry fields yield abundant fruits every year, and the Strawberry Farm holds the record for baking the largest strawberry cake ever!

Along the roadside near the farm, you can find the famous strawberries, and at the end of the road, these fruits make their way to Baguio markets. Some visitors participate in strawberry picking under the supervision of the farm owners and pay for the strawberries they pick. It’s an amazing experience to walk along the fields carefully to avoid stepping on strawberry seedlings or on strawberries that are already ripe and bend like the bountiful strawberry leaves, hiding the strawberries from view.

If you choose to pick strawberries by yourself and want to taste them, make sure to wash the fruit thoroughly before eating.

Strawberry cultivation brings great success to this region, and every year, the “Strawberry Festival” takes place, attracting many people. It is highly recommended to participate in the festival, which is held in March. During this time, the weather is pleasant and suitable for excursions.

At the festival, tourists can buy and enjoy local produce. This area provides a livelihood for residents engaged in traditional agriculture.
